PROJECT INFORMATION

The project originally started at Mikros Image which was a leading company digital visual effects, animation and post-production located in Paris, Liège, London and Montreal.

These high experience is now integrated  into Technicolor Creative Studios, which is a leader in the worldwide media entertainment. The company operates visual effects, motion graphics and animation units for films, episodic series and video games under their subsidiaries: Moving Picture Company (MPC), The Mill, Mikros Animation, and Technicolor Games.

A typical day is extremely hectic for the individuals involved in managing the generated data.

What implications does this have for their day-to-day operations?

Regardless of the camera and settings chosen by the producer, the results of his hard work are stored on several memory cards filled with files.

The very first thing that is done as soon as a card has been removed from the camera is to protect the contents.

Because the workload consists of various tasks aimed at protecting the original footage and delivering a finalized production, time constraints become increasingly demanding.

To cope with this, they are actively seeking to automate as many activities as possible, allowing them to efficiently manage a large volume of productions simultaneously with their existing team.

Streamline the daily postproduction process.

CHALLENGES

Technicolor Creative Studio utilizes a combination of Hybrid Storage and Archiving Systems, with Dell technologies PowerScale (Isilon) serving as the primary storage solution and the Oracle Tape Library as the secondary storage option.

Their post-production workflows required an intensive access to their digital media production.

Currently, the post-production teams are required to archive the dailies rush to the secondary storage on a daily basis throughout their post-production workflows.

Furthermore, the Datalab team reloads the required files daily for the subsequent steps, such as montage, sound effects, Postsynchronization, studio dubbing, and ultimately sound mixing and editing.

For every stage, the digital content needs to be supplied in the primary storage where the applications are operating.

Given the size of their assets, they are in need of an extremely automated and high-performing solution.
